Final Submission

Image
These pages for my final submission are the same as the ones found on my "Third Quarter Submission" post. I did have a few revisions that could have been made, however I was unable to make them. The reason for that is because I no longer have access to the softwares that I had been using to create them. A revision that I had planned on doing was upgrading the title on the article pages. After the third quarter submisission I was not satisfied with how bland it looked. I wanted to change the font and the coloring. I feel like this would have made that part of the article more interesting and exciting to look at. Another revision I would have made was simple, I was going to add a page number to the table of contents. This would have made it more conventional to other magazines. Besides those revisions, this is my final product for my magazine.

CCR Question #4 Draft

Technology was incorporated in my project in many ways. The entire project was created on a computer using the soft wares Publisher, In-design, and Photoshop. When I used Publisher it was to set a rough draft of what the layout of the magazine would look like. I would set pictures in place using the ruler across the top to make sure that everything was aligned correctly. When I switched to using In-design it was to finalize the text and overall look. I used In-design to make the columns for my article. Another form of technology that was used in the process of this project was my phone. I used the camera on my phone to take the pictures used in the magazine.

CCR Question #3 Draft

Throughout the process of creating my magazine my production skills have evolved. Prior to starting this project I had never worked with Publisher or In-design before. I did have experience with Photoshop, however only briefly. Now that I have completed the magazine I have gained much more knowledge in all three of these soft wares. Publisher and In-deign both taught me how to actually compose the magazine and make sure text and photos were in correct places in order for the final product to look presentable. Photoshop is where I would take the photos before Publisher or In-design so that they could be edited in preparation for the final magazine.

CCR Question #2 Draft

From my audience engagement research I learned that you want to market and sell your product wherever your audience would typically be. For example, because my target audience is adults and families, it would be best to market at grocery stores or online. Based on that research, my marketing plan was to produce both print media and online media. The print media would be found in local grocery stores as well as news stands. My partner and I also created an Instagram account for our magazine. This was effective because the majority of our age range would typically have social media and could find us there. While doing research on magazine distribution I learned about the producer, the wholesaler, and the retailer. This is when there are many factors involved in the magazines distribution. There is an alternative to that called direct distribution. This is when the company makes, sells, and delivers their product on their own. My distribution plan was to do that. I would make the content...

CCR Question #1 Draft

One way in which I reflected the conventions of a travel magazine in my own project is with the simplistic cover. Travel magazines tend to list a few places on the cover as an attention grabber that they will go into detail on in the magazine contents. Another conventional thing I incorporated on my magazine cover is the season and year of the magazine issue. On my magazine this is found in the top right corner. In addition to the conventional cover, my article pages have conventional aspects as well. At the bottom of the pages the articles are on I included the username of the Instagram of the magazine. This is a subtle way to advertise the social media and typically found in magazines. There are definitely social groups being represented in the magazine. Typically, you can recognize what social group a magazine is aiming towards by the photos or topics of the articles. The cover photo on my magazine is of the downtown Sarasota area. This indicates the magazine is aimed towards a weal...

Third Quarter Submission

Image
Since my midterm submission I have made some revisions to my magazine. The front cover has an updated picture and I changed the placement of some of the content on the cover to follow the conventions of some other magazines. On the table of contents I added descriptions below each of the article titles. This way it is easier for readers to know what they are about to read and can choose what they want to read. When I did this I had to change around the format a bit. I kept one picture and shifted around the headings. The articles I also improved since the midterm submission. After learning how to work in Indesign, I used that to complete the rest of the article. I imported a few new pictures and I fixed the columns of content. The finishing touches to the article was adding the page numbers at the bottom as well as listing our Instagram.

Distribution Plan

I have put together a distribution plan for my magazine based on research I have gathered on the conventions of a magazine distribution plan. My plan for distributing the magazine is to use a website, an app, and print. This will give the readers many options on how they will get access to the magazine based on what works best for them. The website and app I will create and the printed magazines I will need to collaborate with local grocery stores to get the magazine on shelves. On the website for the magazine readers can view old issues up to the most current one. They will have a preview option which will show a portion of an article from the magazine so they can decide if they want to purchase the entirety of the magazine. The app can be available in the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store. The app will have similar options as the website, but this can be a more convenient way for people to read the magazine wherever they are. These three options are my plan on how to d...

Digital Distribution Business Travel Magazine

Image
The Business Travel Magazine has a website where they can distribute issues of their magazine online. Anyone can view their website page - with or without a subscription to the magazine. However, a subscription is needed to view full issues. Occasionally the website will displays small sections of the articles on the home screen as a way to lure readers into wanting to read the full article. The website for this magazine offers much more than just the articles. On the home page they have direct links to hotels and airlines so you can book them from their website. Features like this on a website make it very convenient for people that may be interested in their magazine.

Digital Distribution Family Traveller

Image
Family Traveller Magazine distributes their magazine digitally through their own app. The app is called Family Traveller and can be found in Apple app store as well as Google play store. I downloaded the app so that I could better understand how it works. When you open the app, the home page has all of their previous and current issues available to preview. They also have the option to buy it for $4.99. An app is also a great way to distribute a magazine because it is convenient way for people to receive the news if they have a smart phone.

Digital Distribution West Coast Families

Image
I continued research on the West Coast Families magazine by looking into how they distribute their magazine digitally. Westcoastfamilies.com is their website where subscribers can get access to the issues of the magazine. The website is designed in an organized way where people can view past issues, current issues, and choose what category of article they see based on what they are looking for. A website is an efficient way to distribute a magazine online and it is a way that I am considering for my project.

Photoshop

Image
Final revisions were made to the front cover of my magazine and this time I explored using Adobe Photoshop. Looking at my cover I felt that there needed to be something added to make it more bold. Originally the text was placed in a spot that made it hard to read. This was because the hue of colors on the picture was too similar to the text I had. I opened the picture into Photoshop and adjusted the contrast, hue, and saturation and it improved my photo. Now I feel the text shows up better on the cover. Below is the photo before and after I worked on it in Photoshop.

Distribution Research

After doing research I have gathered information on distribution models and formed ideas of how to make my own. I learned that a conventional distribution model will have three factors. Those being the producer, the wholesaler, and the retailer. The producer is the person who supplies the product for the company to sell. The producer gives the product to the wholesaler to sell in large quantities, and the retailer will buy the product from the wholesaler to sell in smaller quantities. In some cases, this model for distribution can come across conflicts. Another form of distribution is direct distribution. This is when the company does it all on their own. Companies would have to make, sell, and deliver  products all on their own. This model is used by magazine companies that have been successful such as Dell and Avon. This model can save a significant amount of money. For our magazine, my group mate and I decided it would be best to use this direct distribution model. We would prod...

Marketing Plan

Image
Our purpose in creating the Getaway Travel magazine is to attract travelers from across the nation to read our magazine and get inspiration for vacation with families or friends. Audience will be adults, male and female, ages 25-50 that could potentially have children ages 1-18. They will have to be middle to upper class, maintaining a stable job. We will be making our magazine print media as well as an online copy. Print copies will be available in grocery stores and select local news stands for purchase. The online version of the magazine will be available for access among a paid subscription. In order to get the word out about our magazine, we are creating an Instagram page where we will post about our magazine. The photos below show an inspiration social media account from the Sunset Magazine followed by our own version of a social media account for Getaway Travel.

Audience Engagement Research Business Travel Magazine

Image
This magazine, Business Travel Magazine, targets employed adults that are interested in, or need to, traveling for business purposes. This is different than other travel magazines I have done research on because others are for people that are going to be traveling for leisure, not work. This magazine does have similarities to mine as well because they both target adults that will be travelling. Business Travel Magazine markets their product to small and medium sized enterprises and distributes to over 18,000 readers by print media. Knowing that the adults that will be reading their magazine are going to be employed, The Business Travel Magazine will distribute their magazines near companies or communities of middle to upper class. When I distribute my magazine, it will have to be around communities of middle to upper class as well and also schools knowing that adults with kids will be around that area.

Audience Engagement Research Family Traveller

Image
The Family Traveller Magazine is one that is very similar to mine when it comes to target audiences. Family Traveller targets adults who are interested in going on vacation for leisure. They target adults who are families and may be travelling with children. My magazine, Getaway, also should be advertised to adults that are parents with children. In their online media kit from 2018, Family Traveller includes that they reach their audiences through news stands and subscriptions. They use both online and print media. Having this variety is important when distributing products to make sure that everyone can have access if they are interested. Because Family Traveller targets adults with children, they know that they most likely know how to use computers and could easily navigate a website with their magazine. Since my target audience is the same, making a website for my magazine as well would be a good idea.

Audience Engagement Research West Coast Families

Image
West Coast Families Magazine has a target audience of families, parents, kids, grandparents, etc. Their magazine is not focused on travel like mine is, however, they do target the same audience of families as mine does. West Coast Families Magazine markets their product by advertising to mothers, fathers, grandparents, educators, caregivers, and more. They have around 600,000 readers on print and thousands more online on a digital copy. They make the print version available to pick up at over 600 locations across the west coast. I would use similar aspects to market my product. I would have a print copy available for pick up at select locations and also offer an online digital version.

Classroom Activity

Image
In class I learned how to use the software Indesign for making changes to my magazine pages. I originally was using Publisher to create the pages for my magazine. Indesign has many similarities to Publisher making it an easy transition for me to learn. There are some differences in the softwares and that did make some changes more challenging for me. An example of this is the various options of styles and layout, with Publisher I was more limited with options. After working through making one page with my administrator I am deciding to continue using Indesign for the rest of my project. I believe that it can help me get my project to where I want it to be.

Target Audience

My travel magazine, "Getaway Travel", is targeted towards anyone interested in travel. The audience of travelers will be adults, such as young couples, families, or couples ages 65 and up. The magazine targets people traveling for leisure more than business because of its many tourist destination spots listed throughout the magazine. Since the people will be traveling on vacation and leisure, they are most likely to be planning their trips months in advanced as opposed to within the month. These people would most likely be coming from northern states or other countries. This is because Getaway Travel is based around Florida spots to travel to and it is common for northern states to be attracted to beach scenes and warm weather. The target audience needs to have a stable income in order to travel to the places advertised in Getaway Travel.

Feedback and Revision

Image
The final revision I made after getting feedback from my class was on the table of contents. The first change that I made to the table of contents was the background color. In the first you can see that I had a pink background to match a color scheme. I changed that to be white. The reason for this was because I believe it looks more professional and also for printing purposes it is more conventional. I also added descriptions under each of the article titles to inform the readers more. When I did this I had to change the format a bit. I kept only one photo and made it bigger in size. Then I shifted around the headings.
